LOVES PARK — A company that makes merchandising fixtures and custom displays for retailers is building a $20 million warehouse and distribution center near East Riverside Boulevard and Interstate 90.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for Siffron, which will build a 319,000-square-foot facility, with the potential of expanding the facility to 500,550 square feet in the future. The facility is expected to open in December.
Siffron has a manufacturing plant in Rockford and a smaller warehouse in Loves Park. The new distribution center, near the Costco store that’s under construction in Loves Park, will help the company increase its manufacturing capabilities, said Robb Northrup, Siffron’s director of marketing.
“We do have a few secondary warehouses,” Northrup said. “One is in Loves Park, and our manufacturing plant is actually split between warehousing and manufacturing.
“So the goal will be to consolidate the warehousing over there and the other warehouse facilities into this distribution space so then our manufacturing plant can be full manufacturing and fit even more machines and equipment into the building.”
It’s not clear how many jobs Siffron’s distribution center will create.
“That’s a tough call,” Northrup said. “It really depends on the kind of products that we bring in and the type of machinery we bring in, so number-wise it’s really hard to gauge.”
Loves Park Mayor Greg Jury said Siffron’s decision to build in Loves Park is good news not only for the city, but for the entire region. He said he expects two or three additional projects near Siffron’s facility to be announced within the next month, creating hundreds of construction jobs.
“This is going to be the hotbed for construction for Winnebago County for the next few years,” Jury said.
Jury said a tax increment financing agreement was executed between the city, Siffron and the project developer, Becknell Industrial. He did not immediately have details on the dollar value of tax breaks that Siffron will receive based on the agreement.
